WELCOME BACK PARENTS AND STUDENTS
The first Wednesday of each month I will be updating this site to give you an idea of the direction your child's physical education classes are going. Please e-mail me at [email protected] with any questions and concerns.
Testing for Progress:
All students K thru 5th will be tested in the Fall and Spring. The test utilized will be the Presidents Physical Fitness Test. This test is approved by the DOE for measuring growth in Physical Education. The testing areas include: agility, cardio, flexibility, core strength and upper body strength. This is not for a grade. It is to compare your child to the national average and show progress. We have a new program called Fitstats that will work somewhat like Harmony. Parents will be able to log in and out to see the progress their child is making. When it is up and running we will send a letter home to parents.
In the Fall we will learn some of the major muscle groups and in the Spring we will learn the major bones. This is all done verbally during warm-ups and the children do very well with most passing in the 90% range. We are testing in PE until Christmas time for muscles.
9-05-18
We have started soccer and are in the middle of our soccer drills and will follow that up with a soccer tournament for 4th and 5th graders.
Our second and third graders will be playing Mickey Soccer and Soccer tag after we do drills and skills for Soccer.
Students will also be taking a Soccer Shooting test and will be doing and Soccer assessment test before the first report cards come out. The soccer assessment test is based on a 4-3-2-1 rubric. The (4) being the best and a (1) being the worst. If the child scores a (4) it means they have mastered the skill and made very few mistakes. A (1) means that they have a lot of problems with the skill and still need to work on the skill. We will be taking our Fall Fitness assessments next. Students will be tested for flexibility, core strength, agility, cardio strength and upper body strength.
10-4-18 The students have finished their soccer tournament and their assessments. They have also begun learning and reviewing 16 major muscles and the exercises that utilize those muscles. We are starting Miles for Smiles and Scoopball. We will be starting Scooters after Scoopball, this is a favorite with all the kids.. Have a great Fall break!!!
11-7-18 I hope everyone had a great Fall break and a fun filled Halloween!! We are all finishing up scooters.
The 2nd and 3rd graders will be starting their cardio unit playing rip-tag which they love. A black band is put around the upper arm and either red or yellow flags are stuck to the band using velcro. The goal of this game (besides increasing agility and cardio) is to rip the opponents flag off his arm. There are several variations of the game that we play.
The 3rd-4th-5th graders are on their last few muscles and then we will review and start our verbal testing.
We will start Jump-rope For Heart on November 20th and the envelopes will be due back on December 3rd. to the elementary office. This is not only a good cause but it also allows us to order some PE equipment. Have a great Thanksgiving!
12-5-18 Jump-Rope for Heart was a huge success!! I am waiting on the final word from the office on how much our total was but the kids were amazing. The kids are jumping rope and learning how to do cold starts, run throughs, front door and back door enter and exits and jumping to some chants like Teddy Bear. We will be starting basketball when we get back from Christmas vacation.Muscle testing is over and 90% of the students scored a perfect score. We will be starting to learn bones in February.
1-11-19 Welcome back!! We are starting one of the students favorite unit which is basketball. We will be doing basic fundamentals including ball handling, dribbling, chest pass, bounce pass, lay-ups, jump shots and free throws. This unit has a shooting test, a written test and a skills assessment test. After this the students will enjoy some basketball scrimmages with each other. We had such a successful fundraiser for the American Heart Association. The students raised $4,688.99. Top fundraisers were Laney and Lacey Fultz. Thank You girls!!!
2-6-19 We are finishing up our basketball unit, because of our e-learning the basketball unit is still ongoing but we are excited to get to our basketball games at the end of the unit. Our floor hockey unit is next, and it is also a favorite of the kids.. This month we will also start learning some of the major bones in our body. This is done verbally like we do with the muscles and most children score a 100%.
3-7-19 The basketball written tests are all finished. We have started learning our bones and dribbling and passing in Floor Hockey. We will start playing hockey games this week and with the 3rd nine weeks coming to a close, our running, crunches/push-ups will also be going up. Kids are all looking forward to baseball season and warmer weather.
4-4-19 Welcome Back from Spring Break.Bone testing has started and so have spring assessment tests. This week we are testing flexibility with the sit and reach box, agility using the shuttles for the shuttle run and cardio strength i.e. running. Next week we will be testing upper body (push-ups) and core strength (crunches). After that, we will be starting some of the students favorite unit-kick ball!
5-1-19 We have just finished up two of the students favorite units, Wiffle ball and Kick ball. We are almost done with our Bone Testing and we are timing for the relay teams for Field Day! School ends early this year so Field day is early. The 21st of May we will have Field Day all day and on the 22nd we will have the Tug of War and Relay races. If it rains we will use the 23rd as a rain make up day. Thursday is awards day in the gym and then school is over.
Please send your children to school with a bottle of just plain water and apply sunscreen on the 21st and 22nd.They can refill their water bottles from the fountains at school.
