Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! My name is Mrs. Hildebrandt. I am the P.E. teacher for all of the kindergarten and first grade classes. I will be updating this page monthly with information about what we have been doing in class and what is coming up next. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at [email protected]. I look forward to a great year with your child!
April 4, 2018 Before Spring Break we switched gears and instead of playing wiffle ball, we did a short unit on kick ball. This gave the students to learn some of the basic rules for baseball and review key concepts, such as offense and defense. Most of the students enjoyed playing kick ball! We have begun our spring fitness testing. We will be completing this in the next week or two. I am hoping for some warmer weather so that we can do our 1/4 mile run outside on the track! We will move on to wiffle ball when our testing is complete!
March 7, 2018 We finished up our basketball unit last week. I was amazed to see how much the students' basketball skills developed in just a few short weeks! This week we are reviewing how to properly throw. We are playing dodge ball to practice throwing. We will soon be starting a short unit on wiffle ball. After Spring Break, we will be completing the spring fitness testing. I look forward to seeing how much stronger, faster, and more flexible the students have become since the beginning of this school year! Have a great Spring Break!
January 10, 2018 It is great to see all of the smiling faces back at school this week! Just before winter break, we ended up spending a few days doing musical hoops. The students enjoyed walking, skipping, and dancing to the music, as well as a little friendly competition! This week we started a unit using the scooters. What fun! Students practiced going forward and backwards while sitting on the scooter. There were lots of smiles and giggles! They will also be learning how to maneuver the scooters while riding on their knees and on their bellies. We will conclude our scooter unit by doing some partner activities. Our next units will be polo ball and then basketball!
December 6, 2017 We are quickly approaching the end of the calendar year and the end of the first semester! We have busy jumping rope in PE the last couple weeks. Most of our practicing has been done with long ropes, with two people turning the rope and one person jumping. We are working on holding and twirling the rope properly, and how to hop like a bunny to jump the rope. We have done front door run throughs, which were exciting for some and scary for others! We have also practiced jumping from a cold start (the rope not moving) with the rope just swaying from side to side, as well as it going over our heads in a big loop. We also used short ropes to practice our rope turning and jumping independently. We have a couple more class periods of jumping rope, and then we will do a little dancing the week before Christmas break! I hope that you all have a blessed Christmas and a very happy New Year!
November 1, 2017 We spent much of the month of November working on developing ball handling skills, including throwing and catching. We practiced starting in the "warrior position" before throwing overhand and how to position our hands for successful catching. The students participated in several different exercises and games to practice these skills. Many of the things we did to practice here at school could also be done at home, even inside with balled up socks! Throughout the next couple weeks we will be working on balance. We will also begin Jump Rope for Heart just before Thanksgiving Break and will continue with a jump-roping unit after Thanksgiving. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
October 4, 2017 We have completed the soccer unit. The students did well developing their dribbling, passing/kicking, and foot trapping skills! They all especially enjoyed playing soccer tag to end the unit. This week we are playing a game called Roadblock. The game is a version of freeze tag in which all participants must follow the lines on the gym floor. If the weather is a bit cooler next week, we will be completing the cardio run to finish our fall fitness testing. In the coming weeks, we will be working on throwing and playing games to work on upper body strength. Have a great Fall Break!
September 6, 2017 We spent the first couple weeks of PE class doing some of our fall fitness testing. We have completed four of the five tests, and will be completing the fifth test in the next couple weeks. The tests give us data in the following areas: agility (shuttle run), cardio (1/4 mile run), flexibility (sit-and-reach), core body strength (crunches), upper body strength (push-ups). The test will all be repeated again in the spring so that we can compare the data and look for growth.
We have also started a soccer unit. We have learned about using an instep kick for dribbling and passing, and doing a ball trap to stop the ball with our foot. This week we are working on kicking goals using the top of our foot, and students are getting to take a turn as the goalie. We will continue our soccer unit the next couple weeks.
